    Security Camp Oz 2009 Cancelled.

Due to problems attracting enough confirmed attendees, Security Camp Oz will not be held in Wagga Wagga in October of 2009. We apologise for cancelling the event but unfortunately, although we had some great speakers lined up, we needed more expressions of interest from attendees to justify asking speakers to donate the time and effort involved in giving their presentation.

It is our hope that we will be able to run a Security Camp Oz event in either Melbourne or Sydney sometime in April of 2010. The current plan is to have a day long set of security related seminars held in either city rather than having a weekend event out at the Charles Sturt Uni campus in Wagga.

If you have a preference for the event being held either in Melbourne or Sydney, please post your preference in the forum as this will direclty influence how we decide on the venue for next year's security event.

    With thanks

    The Security Camp Oz Team.

Dont hold it in April as AusCERT is in May and there is a fair amount of IT Security activity leading up to AusCert.

Can you think about later in the year possibly August / September when it is quieter.  Thanks

I'm saddened by this turn of events, although not surprised since there wasn't much forum activity.

I thought that the "camp" format out in Wagga was a winner and a welcome diversion from the usual inner-city events. On the other hand, Wagga Wagga is an easy 3 hours from my base in Canberra, whereas it's about 5 1/2 hours from Melbourne or Sydney.

Have the organisers considered Canberra as a venue? Unlike Wagga it's not equidistant from Sydney & Melbourne (by road), but it has a few advantages over Wagga:

    • Only 3 1/2 hours from Sydney on quality roads
    • Larger, better-serviced domestic airport with more flights between other state capitals
    • More and better accommodation options
    • Retains the semi-rural feel of Wagga, but with more city conveniences
    • 2 large universities and multiple minor ones
    • Many gov't departments with full-time IT security staff

I may be biased as a Canberran, but I would rather visit a quiet remote location than deal with Sydney's crowds, public transport (or e-tag-only toll roads) and pricey accommodation.

Having said all this, if the choice is between Sydney and Melbourne, I vote Melbourne (at least it's easy to navigate for us simple country folk).

Please please please give Melbourne a go.  It seems that a large number of industry events are held in Sydney.

    And invite Bruce Schneier !

    Thanks ... Margaret

    There is no financial crisis

Yup There is no financial crisis What's up? Bored in class here, decided to introduce myself. So something has been bugging me for a while now . There was this occurence... When I was done with school one day I headed out, I hadn't eaten lunch so I took a detour to this fast food joint and picked this sandwitch from the menu and took it to a table and sat down when it suddenly occured to me they didn't charge me! Yeah evidently they were super busy and distracted because there was this manager/investor type looking around everywhere and talking to them. The reason I didn't realize this was because my head was spinning over this disturbing thought I had about the recent stock market crash last year. . The fact is that nothing crashed except currency! All the people in all the companies are still there, all the technology is still there and not forgotton. Now obviously besides the fact that the dollar is known to have lost value the price of stock(in dollars) has also crashed. Now think! Shouldn't the opposite have happened? How can stock value fall more than currency? It can't! This financial crisis is purely psychological and those who don't snap out of it are doomed to failure. Not that it matters much to me personally at this stage in my life though but my guess is that most people are fully unaware or only partly aware that most stock is currently undervalued and there will be no depression. This is so audaciously simple that it just goes over everyone's heads. All of these figures of low growth don't mean anything. Answer me this, if the growth of the last decade was 20% then what difference does it make if everything shrinks by 10% over the next decade? Answer, none! There is no crisis or as that one person whose name I don't recall right now said, it's just an opportunity.
